The Thumper

Fifty years ago today, Ted Williams walked up to the plate on a chilly, overcast day at Fenway Park and stepped into the batter's box in the bottom of the eighth inning against Baltimore pitcher Jack Fisher. He took his familiar stance, looked at the first pitch for a ball, swung and missed at the second, then drove the third pitch into the bullpen for the most famous farewell in baseball history.
Ted Williams had gone out the way so many players dream about and almost none accomplish: He homered in his final at-bat.
"I was gunning for the big one," Williams said in the clubhouse after the game. "I let everything I had go. I really wanted that one."
Exactly 50 years ago. Today. THE Red Sox legend....

THE sign

Another Red Sox icon is headed to the disabled list....
The Citgo sign, the bright beacon above Kenmore Square, will go dark today for a 1-to-2-month hiatus while crews replace its 218,000 LED lights with brighter, more flexible, weather-resistant versions. Just another injury to the wounded. The facelift will also cover the lights with new acrylics that will make the sign’s colors — red, white, and blue — more vibrant, and protect them from ultraviolet rays. The sign’s pulsating sequences will remain the same. The renovation may be the longest that the sign will remain entirely dark since its four-year blackout three decades ago.
How much worse can the season go, casuality wise, yet, our boys are still in the wild card chase with a suprising 54 - 42 record. Even though the symbol of our team will be lights-out for up to 2 months, it will come back-to-life BRIGHTER than ever and just in time for the playoffs. In other news, Josh Beckett a.k.a. BEX is returning for the first time since May 18 tonight at Safeco Park in Seattle. Bex doesnt speak the day before his scheduled start because of his intense prepartion. Yet, Terry Francona is confident our ACE will return to his throne and dominate. "You can hear him in the dugout making stupid comments. He's loose, ready, and ready with fire."

post america

"This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else." A world in which the United States will no longer dominate the global economy, orchestrate geopolitics, or overwhelm cultures. Are these the principles on which our founding fathers would want in control of our country? Our global economy is extremely important in the success of the United States but we shouldn’t lay down our values for other countries. We are and always have been the example on which all other parts of the world strive for. True democracy.

diamond eyes

new album released today, after 4 years of much anticipation. this one is for chi. our dear friend and bassist who has been in a state of prolonged unconsciousness since late 2008. "come out of your head, tonight.."
floating on the water ever changing
picture hours out from that
in tune with all our dreams
the ocean takes me into watch you shaking
watch you weight your powers
tempt with hours of pleasure
take me one more time
take me one more wave
take me for one last ride
im out of my head, tonight...

an amazing documentary and insight into one of the most disputed racial events in recent history. allen iverson was one of america's top high school basketball athletes in 1993 on the verge of becoming a superstar. however, one night at a bowling alley in hampton, virginia, changed everything. his image forever questioned, his life never the same. yet he rose above it all to become one of the NBA's best superstars, 4 time leading scorer, 11 time all-star, 1 NBA finals appearance and a MVP. for any sports fan, for any american citizen, this film has something to say, not just about sports, but race and American society at this particularly crucial moment in our country’s history.

Sixteen years ago today, the world lost an icon, the music industry lost a rockstar and I lost a hero. Kurt Cobain was murdered April 5, 1994 -- falsely idenitfied as a suicide shortly after his body was found on April 8th. His words and music will forever live on....

kobe

kobe bryant. the best ever? the best laker? only time will tell...but he did just pass jerry west for most points in lakers history with 25,208. an amazing feat for a player who just turned 31. magic johnson, 5 'ships with LA, was asked if he is now the greatest player to ever wear the gold n purple and he replied - "not yet, but if he can get to 6 championshps, he will then be the greatest laker"
i think kobe IS the greatest laker NOW. not the BEST ever. i believe he has a few more ships to bring home before MJ will pass the torch. what do you think?
